Happy birthday to us! Reflections on 21 years
This month we will be marking the 21st year since we started JRP Solutions. This time last year we were looking forward to celebrating this great milestone with a big party but, it’s not to be! Not yet anyway. Still, we will be raising a glass, and taking a few moments to reflect on what has changed in those 21 years.

I was one of a very rare breed in the early ‘80s – I actually did an Energy Engineering degree at Swansea University. It was the decade following 2 oil crises, the 3-day working week and miners’ strikes. The UK, if not the world was waking up to our traditional sources of energy being a finite resource – the writing was on the wall. But while concerns about rising global temperatures in relation to greenhouse gas emissions had been documented as early as 1975, Climate Change in the 80s was still a subject for the cranks, and ‘Eco Warrior’ was an insult not a badge of honour – unless you were an energy student that is.
So when I started JRP Solutions, my mission was to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions wherever and whenever I could, particularly within industrial process environments where I could see I would have the most impact. I also wanted to take others on that journey with me.
I am proud to say that we have built a fantastic team! A wonderful blend of experience and youth (who we have trained from university) with an amazing capability across energy, sustainability and facility asset management. We added breadth and depth to JRP’s scope in 2017 with the acquisition of The Green Consultancy, which means we are in a perfect place to practically support those who do want to take the journey to Net Zero seriously.
We have fantastic customers! I could never have imagined in those early days that our client base would grow to include such blue chips as Vodafone, Toyota, GlaxoSmithKline, the NHS, dozens of universities plus hundreds of smaller organisations. It’s very rewarding to know that every job delivered for a client goes some way to making a real contribution to our clients’ organisational objectives and to reduce the impact we all have on the world around us.
We have high credibility backed by certifications in ISO 9001 (since 2003 so leading the way), ISO 50001 and now B Corp certification pending. It’s important to us to ‘walk the walk’ so that our clients can see that we mean what we say.
I’m also very proud of how we use our platform to speak out. We are absolutely committed to raising awareness of climate change issues and to sharing our knowledge, expertise and best practice. We do this through regularly writing articles for different publications; creating factsheets, holding webinars and voluntary speaking engagements at universities, associations and commercial events. We were also involved in leading the Energy Conscious Organisation (EnCO) initiative, launched in conjunction with ESTA, to make behaviour change a mainstream strategy for improving energy efficiency.
So much has changed in 21 years but it seems that it’s only the last 2 years when the issues we have been banging on about all these years are starting to dawn on people generally! The Paris Agreement was a significant step forward in 2016, but the actions of Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough have been game changing – taking the dangers of climate change into people’s sitting rooms in a way that no amount of Government legislation or advice could. But, sadly, even now, we know that many businesses, organisations and individuals who are in a position to make positive change are not taking it seriously enough or being too slow to act, putting profit and convenience before the planet.
What of the future? The journey ahead is not going to be easy. The government’s Net Zero targets will only be met if there is a step change in commitment, legislation and behaviours.
The only prediction that I can make about the future is that we at JRP will keep banging that drum and doing what we can to make a difference. In the words of Barack Obama, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”
