What did ESOS cost your business?
£500, £5,000, £50,000? Maybe even more! It is true that complying with the requirements of the Government’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) will have had a price tag for your business. But the actual net cost will depend entirely on what your organisation does with the audit report.
Posted on 23 February 2016.
There will have been the direct cost of the ESOS Lead Assessor, possibly some external consultant costs, plus the internal resource required to pull all the data together and manage the whole process.
From our experience of carrying out ESOS Audits across a wide range of sectors including transport, retail, manufacturing, charities and hospitality, however, all organisations that have taken the scheme seriously rather than just seeing it as a tick box exercise, have the opportunity to make significant savings which far out way the costs of compliance.
In many of these organisations we have identified a significant number of opportunities to reduce energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions and save money that have an average payback of only one year!
If the report is left on a shelf and nothing is done to implement the opportunities identified then anything spent on compliance will be completely wasted and potential savings in emissions and money will be squandered.
ESOS has raised the awareness of energy issues at board level, so now is a really good time for Energy Managers to be putting forward their business cases for energy improvement projects. Delivering improvement projects will be good for your business, good for the environment and good for you!
