Net Zero – a lost cause?

In recent years, the journey toward achieving Net Zero emissions has faced mounting headwinds. What once seemed like an urgent, unified global mission now feels increasingly fragmented, hindered by economic, political, and social challenges. Is Net Zero becoming a lost cause?

Mounting barriers to progress

There is a noticeable decline in public and political appetite for climate action. As pressing socio-political issues, such as ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as growing trade tensions and tariff wars, dominate global discourse, climate ambitions are increasingly sidelined. Meanwhile, economic recessions across multiple regions have drained public funds and diminished private investment, further restricting progress.

Those individuals responsible for the sustainability of their organisations are often operating as a Sustainability Department of One struggling to deliver any meaningful progress and make a real difference focusing instead on compliance, data gathering and reporting.

Rising National Insurance (NI) and other fiscal pressures are compounding the problem, diverting funds from sustainability efforts. And perhaps most alarmingly, climate scientists warn that we have already breached the 1.5°C global temperature threshold, a symbolic and scientific milestone once considered the red line.

A growing sense of hopelessness

Against this backdrop, it is no surprise that many are experiencing a growing sense of hopelessness. With every delay in implementing meaningful legislation, such as the EU’s stalled anti-greenwashing laws, and the apparent presence of ulterior motives (such as geopolitical control), the public is left questioning whether global leaders are truly committed to climate goals or indeed are those their real goals?

Is it too late?

This raises difficult but necessary questions: Is it already too late? Do we simply give up? And more importantly, can we afford to give up?

The answer must be a resounding NO!

Despite the setbacks and the daunting scale of the challenge, surrender is not an option. Every fraction of a degree matters. Every tonne of greenhouse gas (GHG) we can avoid emitting has the potential to save lives, preserve biodiversity, and secure a more stable future.

A call for collective responsibility

While global cooperation is essential, especially from the world’s largest emitters, individuals, communities, and smaller nations still have a critical role to play.

We must continue doing everything we can to reduce our environmental footprint, cut GHG emissions, and safeguard the natural world but, and it is a big but, it has to be financially sustainable too.

In the face of adversity, perseverance matters. Let us remain steadfast in our efforts and hopeful that the world’s most powerful players will eventually awaken to the urgency and responsibility of this shared mission.
