SERVICES | INITIAL ENERGY ASSESSMENT (IEA)
Initial Energy Assessment (IEA)
An IEA highlights where energy is being wasted and provides specific, quantified opportunities to reduce consumption, such as behaviour change, lighting upgrades, HVAC optimisation, solar PV installation, and variable speed drives, each with kWh savings, cost savings, carbon savings, and payback periods.
Proud to have worked with:
An Initial Energy Assessment (IEA) is conducted to the ISO 50002 standard and will:
- Identify clear, costed energy‑saving opportunities
- Provide a detailed understanding of how energy is used
- Highlight operational and behavioural issues
- Support compliance and good governance
- Provide a roadmap for continuous improvement
- Provide a baseline for future monitoring and optimisation
- If acted upon, will reduce operating costs, reduce carbon emissions and support Net Zero goals
Who would benefit from an IEA?
An IEA is typically relevant for:
-
Larger organisations subject to ESOS compliance
-
Energy intensive industries and manufacturing facilities
-
Schools, hospital, public buildings and local authorities
-
Hotels, sports centers and leisure facilities
-
Any organisation that wants to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions
An Initial Energy Assessment provides:
- Financial savings
- Carbon reductions
- Operational improvements
- Behavioural change opportunities
- A clear investment roadmap
- Evidence for compliance and governance
- A baseline for future monitoring and optimisation
To produce a comprehensive IEA the Auditor must:
- Understand building and plant systems in depth
- Be able to quantify savings accurately
- Know what good looks like and bring knowledge and expertise from other sites and industries to the process
- Identify hidden or systemic issues that may not be readily obvious
- Factor in compliance issues such as health and safety or emission regulations
- Be able to turn the IEA findings into a practical roadmap
- Provide an unbiased assessment of energy and carbon emissions
Most organisations will struggle to meet the above requirements from internal resources/personnel.
Our highly qualified and experienced auditors deliver clear, ISO 50002-compliant energy assessments.
Each assessment is detailed, practical, and aligned with recognised standards to ensure accuracy and value.
We follow a simple, structured process. This ensures consistency, transparency, and high-quality outcomes at every stage.
Kick-off meeting
We agree timescales, scope of work, site visit requirements, and the data needed to begin the Initial Energy Assessment (IEA).
Request for Information (RFI)
We issue a detailed RFI outlining all data required to complete the IEA efficiently and accurately.
Data analysis
We review the supplied data to identify key issues, trends, and operational factors affecting energy use.
Site audit visit
Our auditor inspects the site, focusing on the most energy-intensive areas and critical processes.
On-site discussions
We engage with personnel responsible for energy management to understand how energy and carbon are currently controlled.
Follow-up data requests
We request any additional information identified during the site visit to fill gaps or clarify findings.
Report preparation
The auditor produces the IEA, including calculated savings, payback periods, carbon reductions, and recommended timescales.
Presentation of findings
We present the IEA to site representatives, allowing time for questions, discussion, and feedback.
Project delivery support [optional extra]
We can support the implementation of recommended measures, helping to turn identified opportunities into real energy, cost, and carbon savings.
Measurement and verification [optional extra]
We track energy performance after implementation to confirm savings and validate results. This ensures the expected benefits are achieved and sustained over time.
