SECR reporting, ESOS assessment, Net Zero strategy and plan
Over £220k energy and 520 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide) savings were identified and a commitment made to achieving Net Zero using a targeted strategy.
Summary
Westons Cider is a well-established, traditional cider maker with a turnover of over £60m employing two hundred and thirty people and a range of well-known brands. They use traditional methods in their cider making process with apples sourced from within a 50-mile radius of the Cider Mill. Their brands are now available in over 40 countries globally.
JRP Solutions was initially appointed to provide energy and carbon reporting to achieve compliance with the Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting (SECR) scheme which is a replacement for the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme.
JRP collated all the organisation’s carbon emissions data for scopes 1 and 2, and grey fleet emissions, and compiled a greenhouse gas emissions report to be inserted into their directors’ report.
Following on from this SECR work, the company approached JRP to complete a series of energy surveys and associated reports to comply with the requirements of the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme, ESOS.
Having had discussions with the customer about their desire to start working towards achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions, JRP adopted an approach to
completing the ESOS report that included emissions as well as energy and added a carbon price to any energy savings measured to highlight the true cost.
The report showed that whilst 90% of energy used was split between haulage (37%), steam (32%) boilers and electricity (21%), the costs associated with each were not proportional to the carbon emissions generated.
Whereas the cost of energy to run steam boilers was nearly half the total cost of electricity used, the carbon emissions from steam boilers were double the emissions from electricity used.
This analysis will be very useful in determining priority actions for the Net Zero strategy.
Results
JRP supported Westons Cider to achieve SECR compliance and as a result of the ESOS reporting were able to identify over £220k and 520 tCO2e savings.
Following on from this work, JRP were appointed by the customer to develop a Net Zero strategy that enables:
• a universal understanding of Net Zero
• a formal commitment to a Science Based Targets (SBTi) when the customer is ready
• all GHG emissions (Scopes 1,2 &3) to be annually tracked and reduced over time
• improved, increasingly collaborative supplier engagement
• the implementation of practical, cost-effective measures for achieving Net Zero, including ESOS improvement opportunities and alternative delivery mechanisms.
