Benefits achieved

Significant increase in staff engagement with the internal suggestion scheme, producing high quality ideas, assisted with maintaining ISO 50001 certification and implementation of best practice recommendations.

Summary

SWW had been providing energy and carbon, awareness training as part of their staff induction program for over 20 years. However, the competency levels of staff varied tremendously across the organisation. SWW wished to provide some follow-up awareness and refresher training in energy and carbon to raise awareness, improve energy efficiency, reduce costs and to meet the requirements of ISO 50001.

Be Energy was seen as a quality course which also fitted SWW’s restricted budget. At one hour duration, it was also considered to be of acceptable duration to busy site staff. The eLearning approach fitted well with the dispersed workforce and SWW felt that the ‘Energy at Home’ module would help engage staff with the whole energy journey. They wanted a programme that was suitable for employees that might have very limited understanding or experience of energy and carbon management.

“I think it is pitched at about the right level, not too ‘techy’ that it puts people off engaging and not so basic as to alienate users. I’d like to think even to most knowledgeable individuals might have learned something new from the course”. David Rose, Energy and Carbon Manager, SWW.

Results

JRP created a specific module tailored for the water sector and the programme has now been rolled out to over 1000 people and also adopted by the parent company.

One key measure of the programme's success is that Be Energy has given significant traction to SWW's ‘Innovation Hub’, their internal suggestion scheme, which previously had achieved low levels of engagement. However, since the Be Energy course started there has been a significant increase in the number of suggestions and circa 20 new high-quality ideas coming forward. This is a tangible demonstration of the value of Be Energy.

Harnessing the detailed and intricate knowledge of the site operational staff, process engineers and scientists has been a big bonus.
