The installation of the solar PV across two sites is estimated to generate 1.6GWh/year and save the Client £300,000 p.a. A further £60,000 p.a. potential savings were identified through the initial energy audit.

Summary

This pizza manufacturer and franchise has over 1,200 stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland and more than 35,000 team members. Over 106 million freshly handcrafted pizzas are sold annually. The client produces pizza dough at four sites across the British Isles. JRP were initially appointed to complete a Site Energy Audit at the one of the Client sites so that the organisation could gain a better understanding of how energy was being managed, and to identify improvement opportunities that could subsequently be implemented across all four sites to realise cost, energy and GHG emissions reductions.

Results

The initial audit identified potential energy savings of circa £60k through energy management improvements alone. These would require an investment of £20k with a payback of 4 months. A range of other potential improvement projects identified included:

  • Installation of CHP to supply base load electricity
  • Installation of solar PV to reduce site electricity demand
  • Heat decarbonisation
  • Air compressor heat recovery
  • Waste heat recovery from air compressors
  • Variable speed drives
  • Chiller optimisation
  • Cooling containment
  • Energy management regime including behaviour change
  • BEMS upgrade/replacement

JRP carried out a more detailed appraisal of the solar PV opportunity at the other two sites, initially as a desk top exercise and then a fully costed business case. We then developed an outline specification, engaged with the supply chain and sourced 3 quotes to design, supply and install solar arrays on the roofs of the two factory site’s buildings.

In conjunction with the senior management team at the Client organisation, JRP then helped with the procurement exercise by providing support on the selection of a preferred contractor and commercial contract negotiations. JRP’s project manager also attended weekly progress meetings to support the organisation right through to the commissioning of the system.
