Summary
Oxford was ranked first in the world in the Times Higher Education for eight consecutive years to 2024.
There are over 26,000 students at the university. Including the colleges and Oxford University Press, it is the largest employer in Oxford, supports more than 28,000 jobs and contributes around £15.7 billion to the UK economy.
Energy use within the university’s academic, research and administrative estate, resulted in the emission of over 80,000 tonnes of CO2. The University was targeting a reduction of 21,500 tonnes within five years, but emissions were on an upwards trend. Reductions were required in “absolute” terms, and the proposed 21,500 tonne reduction was therefore particularly challenging.
Results
Tangible results were soon achieved, such as at the Sackler Library: implementing only a small proportion of JRP's recommendations reduced electricity consumption by 26% and it was expected that others will reduce the building’s carbon emissions by over 40%.
