Benefits achieved

The availability of high-quality data on demand means problems can instantly be identified and all progress going forward can now be measured against a base year and student-led projects can be developed and embedded in the curriculum.

Summary

The school was struggling to have accurate energy billing and therefore unable to identify potential savings in energy consumption. There was a strong drive from pupils and parents to be involved in green issues including energy and carbon reduction at school. The school appointed JRP initially to provide energy management support and at a later stage to carry out a Net Zero gap analysis, carbon audit and SECR reporting.

Approach/scope

JRP worked with the school and pupils to collate and analyse energy data and then reported monthly on energy for a year. JRP worked with the school and pupils to collate and analyse energy data and then reported monthly on energy for a year.

The school wanted to extend beyond energy and commissioned a calculation of their GHG footprint aligned to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and Scope 3 Standard. This footprint was shared internally with all staff and in a condensed format with pupils and parents.

A Travel Calculator was supplied to the school so that all modes of transport for school trips could be weighed up against the carbon impacts. A calculator is available for pupils where their data is not stored so that they may look at the impact of their own personal travel choices.

As part of the carbon accounting exercise, a travel survey for the school was undertaken to a) collect data for the GHG inventory and b) to look at the modal choices of staff and pupils on the school commute.

Results

  • Access to data and accurate devices on all fiscal gas and electricity supplies
  • Monthly reporting on energy consumption and ensuring continued data access during supplier change
  • Compilation of the carbon footprint to the GHG Protocol including actions to improve data and ways to involve students via a pupil green team
