Net Zero Gap Analysis and Outline Strategy

Benefits achieved

Provided a clear route forward to achieving Net Zero by 2050 through a prioritised action plan.

Summary

Copart supplies the majority of the UK insurance and accident management sector with salvage recycling and remarketing services. The company’s vision is to fully support the fleet sector with “a carbon-neutral approach whilst consistently delivering world-class customer service”. Copart runs online car auctions and has 15 sites with car storage and workshop facilities across the UK.

Copart appointed JRP to help develop their Net Zero strategy and related implementation plan. This information was essential for consolidating the company’s business strategy focusing on a circular economy model.

Approach

JRP’s scope of work to help Copart set up their Net Zero strategy and outline action plan included:

  • A desk-based corporate governance review, including developing a draft environment policy
  • Establishing a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory
  • Advising on improving data collection and reporting
  • Determining a science-based target (SBT) and trajectory
  • Developing an outline Net Zero strategy including a review of Copart’s environmental management system
  • Establishing a forward-looking Net Zero action plan
  • Energy audits to look for scope 1 and 2 reduction opportunities at selected, representative sites
  • Good practice examples across the portfolio both at site that could be built on and rolled out to all sites within the company, but also good practice examples of work towards Net Zero and the circular economy within the supply chain.

Results

JRP concluded that Copart’s supply chain is by far the biggest source of company annual emissions and needs to be tackled through an enhanced procurement process and direct supplier engagement. A reduction of 42% by 2030 is necessary to be on track to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

The main sources of supply chain emissions are outsourced freight, fuel and plant hire with outsourced freight services accounting for 28% of Scope 3 Category 1 (Purchased goods and services) emissions.

JRP’s report provided a clear route forward to achieving Net Zero by 2050 through a prioritised action plan which included embedding Net Zero into the Energy Management System procedures and processes, a programme of reduction projects and establishing a Net Zero sustainable Copart estate.
