Summary
This organisation employs more than 22,000 people across 9 sites in the UK. Re-organisation meant closing and selling half of the site which prompted the company to carry out a review of the heating system across the entire multi-building site.
Scope
One of the buildings due to close contained five 30-year-old, 10,000kgs/hr, 4-pass steam boilers. The boilers generated steam which was distributed across the whole site to provide heating and process steam. Three new buildings were already being constructed with new independent heating systems and 8 existing buildings were to remain.
Approach
JRP was appointed to make recommendations, set out a business case, including costs and a timeline for alternative heating solutions for the 8 existing buildings and later asked to fully project manage the work.
There were a lot of inefficiencies in the centralised steam distribution system and so replacing this with a comparable system was discounted as an option, although two of the buildings still required steam for the processes they housed. Appropriately designed small steam generation systems were recommended for these. The heat solutions designed for the buildings included radiant heating, warm air heating and electric heating, depending on building type and use.
From business case to optimisation and final sign-off of the new heating solutions, JRP worked as part of the organisation’s senior management team and provided a full project management service including a qualified Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) Manager.
Results
The new heating installation resulted in over 60% savings in energy consumption p.a. JRP fully project managed the installation which was completed on time and to budget.
