When you re-procure your energy on 1st April (or 1st October), did you know that, amongst other benefits, you can save up to £500 per supply by directly contracting your own meter agent?

So, what is a meter agent, what is their role and what other benefits are there? In a typical electricity supply, 3 party agents, appointed by the electricity supplier, are involved in collecting and managing your data:

  1. Meter Operator (MOP) – you pay them in your fixed charges for the hardware (meter)
  2. Data collector (DC) – this agent provides consumption data to the supplier
  3. Data aggregator (DA) – this agent provides data to the body that overseas the demand and supply of electricity

The energy supplier will automatically appoint the agents of their choice but there are several benefits to nominating your own meter agent:

  • This is an opportunity to save money - the services provided are identical, but price varies enormously. If you sign up for longer terms the price can drop considerably, you need these agents regardless
  • You can appoint one provider to do all three (MOP, DC, DA).
  • If you appoint your own provider your data stays in one place even if your supplier changes
  • Better data - you can pick an agent who gives you access to your data in 30-minute intervals each day not just at month-end as one figure on the bill.
    • This helps with data granularity so you can spot high consumption
    • This helps you get good data for carbon reporting
