What is carbon insetting, and what opportunities could it unlock for your organisation?

Unlike offsetting, which invests in carbon reduction projects outside your business, insetting focuses on reducing emissions within your own value chain. That means investing in projects that deliver measurable greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions while also strengthening relationships with suppliers, communities and other partners connected to your organisation.

How is it different from carbon offsetting?

Both approaches involve independently verified emissions reductions, but the key difference is where those reductions happen.

With carbon insetting, your organisation plays a direct role in developing or supporting projects within its sphere of influence, allowing emissions reductions to contribute towards your own Net Zero journey rather than purchasing credits from unrelated third-party projects.

Where could the opportunities be?

Every organisation's value chain is different, which means every insetting strategy will look different too.

For many businesses, the biggest opportunities are found within Scope 3 emissions, particularly purchased goods and services, but there may also be potential in areas such as transport, waste or collaboration with suppliers.
