ESOS compliance
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for qualifying UK organisations. With the Phase 4 qualification date approaching on 31 December 2026 and the compliance deadline on 5 December 2027, now is the time to understand your obligations and prepare.
Your trusted ESOS advisor
JRP helps organisations navigate ESOS compliance, from energy data collection and audits through to reporting and identifying practical opportunities to reduce energy consumption and costs.
Our experienced team of ESOS Lead Assessors combines regulatory expertise, sector knowledge and purpose-built tools to make compliance straightforward — while helping you get meaningful value from your assessment.
Prepare for ESOS Phase 4, meet your compliance obligations and uncover opportunities to improve energy performance.
ESOS requires qualifying organisations to assess their energy consumption across buildings, industrial processes and transport, identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency.
The main dates for Phase 4 are:
- Qualification date: 31 December 2026
- Compliance deadline: 5 December 2027
Organisations must assess whether they meet the qualification criteria on the qualification date. Generally, this includes UK undertakings with 250 or more employees, or those with an annual turnover exceeding £44 million and an annual balance sheet total exceeding £38 million. Specific rules apply to corporate groups.
Phase 4 also introduces updated reporting requirements, including additional information on energy savings achieved and explanations where previous Action Plan commitments have not been met. Display Energy Certificates and Green Deal Assessments can no longer be used as alternative compliance routes.
Understanding your obligations early can help you plan the assessment, organise your data and avoid unnecessary pressure as the deadline approaches.
To get the most out of ESOS, to avoid excess costs and to ensure compliance, now is a good time to start planning for Phase 4. If you would like our help, here are four good reasons to talk to us.
Appointing us as your lead assessor will give you:
- Guaranteed compliance by the due date – or your money back! (subject to full and correct provision of company information)
- A free ESOS Organiser to help you manage the opportunities identified.
- A free user licence for Project Activator, our dynamic, user-friendly, web-based reporting tool to organise and track progress of improvement projects. (For qualifying organisations only. To find out if your organisation qualifies, please get in touch.)
- Sector expertise – your audit will be carried out by someone with expertise in your sector which means a more meaningful process from which you will get more value
Organisations that fail to meet their ESOS obligations may face enforcement action and financial penalties from the relevant regulator. They may also be required to take corrective action to achieve compliance.
The precise consequences depend on the nature of the breach and the applicable enforcement provisions.
Preparing early can help reduce the risk of missed deadlines, incomplete records and avoidable errors. It also gives your organisation more time to address data gaps and plan the work required.
We take a practical, data-led approach to ESOS, helping you understand your energy use, meet the scheme’s requirements and identify improvements that make a measurable difference.
ESOS energy audits and assessments
Our experienced energy consultants assess energy consumption across your organisation, helping identify significant energy uses, inefficiencies and opportunities to improve performance.
We tailor our approach to your operations and sector, ensuring the assessment provides relevant, actionable recommendations rather than a generic list of measures.
ESOS Lead Assessor services
Our accredited ESOS Lead Assessors guide you through the compliance process, helping you understand the requirements, coordinate the assessment and complete the necessary reporting.
We’ll work with your team to establish what information is needed, identify potential gaps and keep the process moving towards the compliance deadline.
Energy data collection and management
Accurate, accessible energy data is essential for a successful ESOS assessment. We help organisations bring together the information needed to understand consumption across sites, buildings, processes and transport.
Our purpose-built ESOS Organiser tool helps structure and manage compliance data, analysis and supporting evidence, making information easier to access and review.
Action Plans and progress reporting
ESOS is increasingly focused on demonstrating progress, not simply identifying opportunities.
We can help you understand your previous Action Plan commitments, review progress against measures and identify the information needed to support reporting obligations.
Turning recommendations into action
The real value of an ESOS assessment comes from understanding which opportunities are worth pursuing and how to deliver them.
We help organisations evaluate potential energy and cost savings, prioritise improvement projects and build a practical plan for implementation.
Where appropriate, our Project Activator tool can help you organise and track energy-saving projects, monitor progress and report outcomes in a format that supports better decision-making.
