SERVICES | NET ZERO AND DECARBONISATION

Net Zero and decarbonisation

The UK Government has set a target of achieving Net Zero greenhouse gases (GHG) by 2050 in line with the Paris Climate Agreement to limit global climate change which will have wide-ranging impacts. Energy and supply chain challenges in recent years as well as changing political climate have dampened some of the initial enthusiasm, but that doesn’t change the fact that we all need to act together to make necessary changes.

Whether you call it Net Zero, decarbonisation or emissions reduction, this is about the the practical process of understanding and addressing your greenhouse gas emissions. It typically involves a whole company, strategic approach developed over a number of years and tailored to your operational and supply chain contexts.

Navigating the complexity of Net Zero

Working towards Net Zero, or at least making significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, is becoming essential for every business. But it’s rarely straightforward.

For most organisations, between 75% and 95% of emissions sit within the Scope 3 supply chain, where businesses have limited direct control. This means that operational improvements and straightforward efficiency measures alone are unlikely to deliver the emissions reductions required.

Building a practical Net Zero strategy

If every organisation achieved science-based targets for the emissions under its direct control (Scope 1 and Scope 2), global climate goals would be within reach. In practice, however, this depends on growing pressure from customers, stronger collaboration across supply chains, and a shift in purchasing decisions that values quality and sustainability alongside cost.

As a result, how you engage with and manage your supply chain is just as important as the actions you take within your own operations. A successful Net Zero strategy takes a practical, pragmatic and evidence-based approach, focusing on your business activities, your most significant sources of emissions, and the specific challenges your organisation faces.

Net Zero readiness

Before making any commitments, or planning business changes, it is beneficial to take a broad overview of where you are now in terms of approach, governance and data availability. This light touch service is an ideal starting point before doing your first greenhouse gas footprint and includes

  • Net Zero awareness session with key stakeholders (e.g. Board, key management)
  • Review of current governance for Net Zero including energy, environmental management and procurement
  • Appraisal of available data and recommendations for ensuring an adequate data set for analysis
  • Short Net Zero readiness report with recommended next steps

Net Zero gap analysis

This accompanies a base year emissions footprint (link) to give a good picture of where you are now and the key objectives for reducing emissions. If you already have a base year footprint, we will work with that as the starting point from which to develop the strategy with you.

The purpose of the gap analysis is to establish a baseline of current practices and governance, and identify the opportunities for change that will make a trajectory to Net Zero possible.

This typically includes:

  • Corporate strategy and cultural review – how does Net Zero fit in the business objectives?
  • Governance review – relevant policies and procedures
  • Audit of current Energy and Environmental Management Systems (EnMS and EMS)
  • Site energy audit and data analysis (Scopes 1 & 2)
  • Site environmental audit and data analysis (water, waste, resource use, etc)
  • Desk based research of key suppliers (identified in expenditure based supply chain analysis) (Scope 3)
  • Transport review – for companies with significant fleet

The Gap Analysis deliverables are a report on the findings and recommendations based on the base year footprint.

Net Zero strategy development and roadmap

This is typically delivered as a follow on to the Gap Analysis, but can be delivered separately if you feel you have a good understanding of where you are but need support turning this into practical actions.

Typical delivery would comprise:

  1. Workshop
    • Discussion of Gap Analysis or equivalent findings
    • Indicative Net Zero trajectory aligned with science-based, sector-appropriate targets
    • Identification of immediate opportunities and barriers
    • Identification of priority facilitating actions
    • Proposed timeline and/or sequence of actions
  2. Co-development of strategy – approach to be agreed dependent on the preferred style of the organisation this could be substantially written by JRP for approval or by the organisation with advisory support
  3. High level roadmap and action plan
  4. Planned Net Zero trajectory, assuming completion of identified actions

Depending on the needs identified in earlier stages, or through discussion with you, we can support with a wide range of further actions to implement your actions towards Net Zero.

This could include:

  • Training (link)
  • Site decarbonisation and options appraisal (link)
  • Waste and/or water minimisation audits and support
  • Supply chain mapping and detailed emissions assessment
  • Science Based Targets (SBTi) commitment and target validation (link)
  • Life Cycle Assessment of key products (up to and including published EPD) (link)
  • Major project expert advisory support
  • Outsourcing or project delivery support (link)

If you need to call on occasional expert support to supplement your in house teams, we can agree a framework agreement so our diverse team is available to support when you need us.

Modular Net Zero

This is a series of smaller pieces of work that can be done one at a time and build up to the give an initial Net Zero strategy and action plan.

  • Operational emissions and control – Ideal if you have physical operations but have not previously considered your site energy and other operations in detail (such as via SECR or an environmental management system). This includes a site energy and environmental audit and review of energy, water, waste and transport data, and recommendations.
  • Supply chain and other material scope 3 – Analysis of purchased goods and services and other aspects of scope 3 that are material to the business. This will identify the highest emissions suppliers and key industrial sectors to focus your decarbonisation efforts
  • Base year footprint and recommended science-based reduction targets – using data from the previous two modules, an all scope greenhouse gas footprint will be assembled. High level emissions reduction targets, appropriate to your significant emissions sources will be recommended
  • Action Plan co-development – review of the footprint and recommendations from previous modules in a workshop where we develop with you a realistic action plan for emissions reductions both in operations and supply chain.

JRP understand the support they are asked to give and deliver on time, budget and in a clear concise professional manner. If only everyone was a reliable as JRP!

Jonathan Blair, Technical Advisor | Westons Cider

We are using JRP’s ‘Be Energy’ eLearning awareness course to help us fully meet the ISO 50001 standard. This course is not only getting good feedback from our staff but the external ISO 50001 auditor completed the course and commented that it was ‘the best energy training course that he had seen’. A feather in the cap for JRP.

David Rose, Energy and Carbon Manager | South West Water

JRP were easy to work with and their pragmatic approach to the project was critical to the development of the submission and validation of our SBTs.

Kate Gallacher, Sustainability Officer | Scottish Leather Group

I have been very impressed by the quality of JRP’s work for the University of Oxford, right from the start. All the energy survey reports have been of high quality and tailored to our specific requirements. Many of the recommendations were not identified in previous surveys. JRP is not afraid to ask difficult questions and challenge the status quo. I have worked with and for energy consultancies for more than 20 years and the quality of JRP’s work is some of the best I have seen.

Philip Pike, Energy Manager | University of Oxford

From the outset, JRP provided a clear direction to us. It was beneficial to gain insight from the non-vehicle manufacturing sector and expert knowledge of the FM sector in particular. Throughout the process, JRP has been a guiding hand but who has also listened to our concerns and questions and provided patient answers to our many questions.

Christine Cooke, Senior Manager | Toyota Motor Manufacturing

We have achieved over 20% energy savings over the last 12 months and no doubt the training was a contributing factor towards this. I am sure that people are much more energy aware than they were before the training and I would recommend anyone who hasn’t done this sort of training to seriously consider it.

Andrew Smith, Property and Energy Manager | Numatic International

The skill and knowledge that was brought to bear demonstrated a level of sure-footedness that was reassuring. The breadth and quality of the work delivered was exactly what we required.

Ola Bankole, Head of Sustainability | London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

JRP delivered a comprehensive suite of audits that has really helped to us to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs across our sites. The opportunities identified were used as a platform to enhance our decarbonisation strategy, providing transparency on the technologies available now. JRP’s consultants were friendly, knowledgeable and professional at all times.
